The duties of this Graduate Assistant position fall within two vibrant and active Centers- the LGBTQ+ Resource Center and the Women’s Center. This is a position to meet the changing needs of the Centers, our mission, programs and goals through marketing, social media and student advocacy and support.
The LGBTQ+/Women’s Center GA will support the center’s missions, initiatives, and undergraduate staff. This position is directly supervised by the Director, Christine Price, and will work in collaboration with a GA for the LGBTQ+ Resource Center AND with a GA for the Women’s Center.
The successful candidate for this position must:
o Be enrolled as a full-time graduate student and be available to work 20 hours per week on campus
o Be open to understanding the distinct needs of each center and their communities
o Be comfortable with working in environments that serve underrepresented, marginalized groups
o Become knowledgeable about LGBTQ issues and Women’s centered issues
o Be willing to attend meetings, and trainings to increase their knowledge on related topics
o Be a strong leader among their peers in an environment that requires professionalism, compassion, and flexibility
o Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
o Be characterized as approachable, hard-working, adaptable, and someone who takes the initiative
o Be an advocate for LGBT issues, and an advocate for Women’s issues
o Be available some nights and weekends to assist with events
The GA’s responsibilities include:
LGBTQ+ Resource Center
o Work with the Director to oversee the programming and support for the Stonewall community
o Work with the LGBTQ GA to promote a safe space, and welcoming community at the center
o Work with the Director to assess and recommend policy updates and services to accommodate the needs of LGBTQ students at KU
o Assist when needed with the promotion and facilitation of the Safe Space Program
Women’s Center
o Work with the Women’s Center GA to promote a safe and welcoming community at the center
o Work with the Women’s Center GA to coordinate outreach on sexual assault prevention programming; includes designing and facilitating presentations, tabling, running focus groups, assessment, etc.
o Co-advise a student organization, FMLA, the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance
o Assess and recommend policy updates and services to accommodate the needs of students who identify as women.
Both Centers
o Oversee marketing and promotion of the centers and student clubs events and activities on social media, webpage, and Engage platforms.
o Oversee the Discussion Groups that are facilitated by student staff for both centers; including schedules, agendas, promotion, and coaching student staff on topics and presentation
o Serve as co-advisor to one of the Center’s student clubs
o Serve as liaison as needed to campus committees
o Plan, coordinate and assess campus events that promote the Centers missions
o Oversee projects and tasks done by UA staff and interns in absence of supervising GA’s
o Work with the Center’s Director, Office Assistant, staff, affiliated organizations, and volunteers of the Centers as needed
o Attend weekly staff meetings
o Be knowledgeable and accurate with regards to FERPA, confidentiality and reporting protocol
o Be knowledgeable and caring with regards to Counseling Center referrals
o Provide referral information about on-campus and community agencies as requested by members of the campus and local communities
o Conduct research on issues, information, and various resources as they relate to the Center’s mission
o Assist with Admissions perspective student visits, various panel discussions for classes and/or tabling events for other KU departments as requested (Health Fairs, Involvement Fairs, Idenity Awareness Days, etc)
o Serve as a liaison, when needed, to outside advocacy groups, professional organizations, or other institutions.
o Maintain a positive representation of the Centers on all social media and serve as a role model and resource for KU students.
o Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Center
o Other duties as needed
