    Graduate Assistant - DSO Generalist

    Reporting to the Director of Disability Services, this position is a two-semester, 20 hour per week graduate assistantship with a stipend of $7500 ($3750 per semester) per year and tuition remission for 9 credits per semester.  The Graduate Assistant (GA) will assist in the provision of appropriate academic accommodations for students with disabilities including communications, records maintenance, test proctoring, and note taking. Training will be provided.

    Experience working with the Disability Service Office will provide the GA with a better understanding of physical, sensory, psychological, neurological, and learning disabilities and their impact in academic and social settings. The GA will also gain an understanding of the provision of reasonable accommodations under the ADA while developing coaching, administrative, organizational, and communication skills.

    Specific areas of responsibility include:

    A. General Office and Administrative Responsibilities

    1. Develop a working knowledge of the accommodation process.
    2. Greet and assist students and office guests.
    3. Provide office support including answering phones, making appointments, and assisting students        with problem solving.
    4. Assist with the process for requesting accommodations by providing information to students and families and maintaining student records.

    B. Communications and File Maintenance

    1. Under the direction of the Director/Assistant Director, communicate with students regarding the status of their accommodation request.
    2. Create and maintain student records.
    3. Assist department in the process of purging old records.
       

    C. Proctor Exams

    1. Monitor students during testing session to ensure a secure testing environment.
    2. Assist in the distribution and collection of testing materials.
    3. Serve as test reader and/or scribe when necessary.
    4. Report suspected irregularities or problems to DSO staff.
    5. Maintain accurate records and complete data entry as necessary.

    D. Other Responsibilities

    1. Assist with data entry in support of the Note taking accommodation.
    2. Assist with acquisition of alternate format textbooks and course materials.
    3. Prepare and convert course materials into accessible formats manually and using available technology.
    4. Assist students with learning to use technology including MyKU, D2L, DSO electronic forms, DSO note taking, electronic planners, text to speech software like natural reader and speech to text software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking.
    5. Meet with assigned students, as needed, to work on executive function and time management skills. Refer students to campus resources as needed.

    E. Special Events and Services

    1. Assist with DSO special programs and campus-wide events, as needed.
       

    F. Professional Development

    1. Participate in professional development activities, as available.
    2. Participate in staff meetings and planning sessions, as needed.
